What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a qualification for a Young Person (aged 16-24) that they gain whilst working for an employer.

Apprenticeships are offered in most occupational/vocational areas on two levels called Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship.

  • Apprenticeships
  • You gain a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2 and possibly a higher qualification.
This provides the skills you need for your chosen career and provides entry to Advanced Apprenticeships.
Apprenticeships usually take at least 1 year to complete. Should you wish to become an apprentice you will need to show you have the ability and determination to complete the programme. Apprenticeships are made up of NVQs, Key Skills, Technical Certificates and Enhancements.

  • Advanced Apprenticeships
  • Advanced Apprentices work towards NVQ Level 3 and Level 4 in some occupational areas.
To do this programme you should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed an Apprenticeship. Advanced Apprenticeships usually take at least 2 years to complete and can also lead to University.

Both levels have frameworks that consist of an NVQ, Key Skills, Technical Certificate and/or an Enhancement.

In order to gain the full Apprenticeship Certificate, the young person must complete all elements of the framework.

Apprenticeships are designed to benefit young people as well as employers. If you are a Young Person, Parent or Employer you can find more information in the corresponding sections of this website.
